The Early History of the IMF


The History of the International Monetary Fund
1-22 July 1944 The IMF is established at the United Nations International Monetary and Financial Conference held in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The Articles of Agreement are signed by forty-four nations.
27 December 1945 Articles of Agreement enter into force after ratification by twenty-nine countries.
8-18 March 1946 Board of governors holds first meeting in Savannah, Georgia, to adopt bylaws and elect first executive directors. Governors decide to locate the fund's headquarters in Washington, D.C.
6 May 1946 Twelve executive directors hold first meeting in Washington, D.C.
1 March 1947 Operations begin.
8 May 1947 First drawing (by France).
